Revolutionary War Patriots in Lake County, Ohio
For over 125 years, members of the New Connecticut Chapter, NSDAR, have researched and identified eighty-eight Revolutionary War Patriots in Lake County, Ohio. With solemn gratitude, we have honored these patriots by marking their graves in our local cemeteries.
Beyond the grave markers, our members believed that the patriots buried in Lake County needed to be permanently honored with a commemorative memorial. In December 2022, our chapter took the lead in creating a Revolutionary War Patriots Bronze Marker, the first in Lake County dedicated to those who served in our country’s fight for independence. Funding was secured through contributions from community members and businesses to make the purchase. We are grateful for their support.
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, our chapter unveiled the memorial on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, in Painesville, Ohio, with the ceremony serving as the official start of America250! celebrations in our community. The names of the eighty-six patriots were recognized with bricks that surround the marker. Since that time, our chapter has discovered two more patriots and has added their bricks to the memorial. The marker is located to the left of the Lake County Courthouse, across from Painesville’s Veterans Park, thanks to the help of Lake County Commissioners.
Please contact us if you know of a patriot buried in Lake County, Ohio, or if you are related to a patriot and interested in becoming a DAR member.
Lake County Patriot Storyboards
The New Connecticut Chapter, NSDAR, is committed to celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country. Our America250! Committee has worked to create an ongoing display of prominent Lake County Revolutionary War Patriots. Ten of these patriots made Lake County their home and contributed significantly to the establishment of many of our communities. We have honored them with individual biographies on chapter-created storyboards placed throughout Lake County in public venues from January 2024 through July 2026.
Careful research was done to communicate accurate information on the storyboards. Our chapter is fortunate to have many dedicated members who documented the history of our patriots. We have two precious resources in our possession that have been handed down through the chapter's generations. The first resource is a New Connecticut Chapter DAR Book from 1902, A Record of the Revolutionary Soldiers buried in Lake County with a partial list of those in Geauga County and a membership roll of New Connecticut Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, compiled by Mary E. T. Wyman. The second resource is a book, Soldiers and Widows of the American Revolution who lived in Lake County, Ohio, by Mildred E. Hoynes Steed, published by our chapter in 1985 through Lakeland Community College Press.
